CONSERVATION BREEDING PROGRAMME OF WILD BUFFALO


THE STATE ANIMAL OF CHHATTISGARH

One of the objectives of Nandanvan Jungle Safari is to promote " conservation breeding of endangered species of wild animals available within the bio geographic range". Wild buffalo (Bubalus bubalis arnee) is the state animal of Chhatisgarh and is listed in the endangered category of species in the IUCN. Therefore it is decided by forest department to establish a new conservation breeding centre at Nandanvan Jungle Safari, Naya Raipur for Wild buffalo, especially for the clone that has been developed in National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal.
The Layout plan and design of the proposed conservation breeding centre for wild buffalo was sent to CZA for approval and the proposal was approved by the Expert Group of Zoo. Designing of the Central Zoo Authority letter no. F.No 19-160/93-CZA(147)(Vol.II)276/2017, dated 13/02/2017.
Then after detailed estimate has been prepared and sent to DIGF (WL), Ministry of Environment, Forest and climate change, GOI, New Delhi; for grant in aid. Letter no. 2017/990 dated 20/02/2017).
The grant was sanctioned for the establishment of conservation breeding centre of wild buffalo during 2017-18 under the integrated development of wildlife habitat scheme with the condition of 60:40 sharing basis by the Government of India and the Government of Chhattisgarh - Letter No. FNo. 34 - 1/2012 WL dated 13/12/2017.
Thus a modern breeding centre at Jungle Safari, Naya Raipur is established in 2.5 hec. area which would help in future for increasing the dwindling population of wild buffalo.
